Full Day Ruins to Backcountry Ride

Towering native cacti line the trials

Open backcountry, big skies and exotic cacti.

This ride begins and ends at the pre-Hispanic archeological site of Danizu. Ride along an age-old trail flanked by Zapotec temples. Climb mountain passes with sweeping vistas of the Valle de Tlacolula. Native flora and strange geological formations make every step along this ride a fascinating experience. Encounter a Camino Real that meanders through old-growth candelabra and nopal cacti groves. Discover ancient bridges lost in hidden wetlands rich in birdlife. Ride past the exotic gardens of the Ex-hacienda de Guadalupe now a quiet retreat lovingly restored by talented artists.

Riding through an agave plantation.

Delicious snacks are served during the ride. A freshly prepared Oaxacan-style “comida” is served at the end of the ride at Rancho Pitaya where riders can relax in hammocks or explore the ranch and meet the other horses.

The pace can be adjusted from laid-back touring to a faster paced ride for the experienced rider.
