Ranch to Hacienda Full Day Ride

The grasslands looking golden in late fall.

This is a point to point day ride departing Rancho Pitaya and ending approximately four hours later at the Hacienda of San Antonio Buenavista. Ride south from the ranch following an age-old shepherd’s trail along the foothills of the Cordillera La Puerta del Sol. Ride against a dramatic backdrop of slate-colorer  limestone and massive organ-pipe cacti. Landmarks, like the rugged Peña Larga, signal the process of the ride. Tranquil grasslands, dotted with the occasional herds of grazing goats and cattle,  turn to a wild west austerity with several interesting gullies to cross. Ascend along a winding trail past massive candelabra cacti to a “lost-in-time” mountain pass. Sweeping vistas of the Valley of Tlacolula  span the horizon.

Riding south from the ranch past massive candelabra cacti

Take a break after a couple of  hours in the saddle to stretch your legs and have some snacks and refreshments. The horses can drink from a fresh water spring. After riding over the terraced slopes of San Sebastian merge on to an ancient path that follows the contours of the  hillside. Small farms emerge at the entrance to San  Antonio Buenavista. Visit one of the most beautifully constructed and preserved reservoirs that dates back to the early 19th century.

Impressive raptors, the Crested Cara-caras are usually seen on this ride.

Dismount at the Hacienda of San Antonio Buenavista, now thoughtfully converted into a boutique hotel. Lunch served on the terrace at the former grain mill. Time to tour the hacienda before returning to the city in private taxi.
